Crystal Downing is the co-director of Wheaton College’s Marion Wade Center and an expert on the Inklings and Inkling-adjacent authors. This week on The Habit podcast, I speak with Dr. Downing, about her new book, Subversive: Christ, Culture, and the Shocking Dorothy L. Sayers.
We discuss the dangers of Christian celebrity, the strategy of shock in Dorothy Sayers’ work, and the subversion at the very heart of the Christian faith.

Leaving a comment here, too, along with the blog…
While listening to this episode, and especially the parts about Sayers’ radio plays, I started thinking that it would be very interesting to hear an interview with the screenwriters of The Chosen, who are trying to do a very similar thing in making the Gospel characters feel like real people. I don’t know if you take suggestions for The Habit guests, but if you do, here’s mine!
I loved this episode and hearing more about the ways Sayers creatively got a lot more people interested in the story of Jesus, even through controversy. I need to find her plays and read them now.
