YOU HAVE STORIES TO TELL.
YOU HAVE IDEAS THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO YOU.
THERE ARE PEOPLE TO WHOM YOU WANT TO GIVE THOSE STORIES AND IDEAS.
IN THE END, THAT’S WHAT GOOD WRITERS DO:
YOU INTRODUCE PEOPLE YOU CARE ABOUT TO STORIES AND IDEAS YOU CARE ABOUT.
Writing is about connecting. And yet writing almost always requires that you sit alone to do the work . . . which means you’re alone with your harshest critic.
Too often the voices of self-doubt shout us down before we get anything written. Or when we do get something written, it’s hard to know whether the work is good enough – or how to make it better.
That’s the problem with the Inner Critic: it can always tell you that something is wrong with your writing but often it’s not very good at telling you how your writing could be better.
The Habit’s library of learning resources will sharpen your skills as a writer and help you develop your unique voice. But what really solidifies those gains will be a community of like-minded writers who give one another just a little more courage.
A lot of my resources for writers are available for free here at TheHabit.co. If you join The Habit Membership, however, you will have full acess to a larger (and ever-growing) library of content. But even more importantly, you will be a member of a community. You won’t just consume content; you will connect with other writers, benefitting from their wisdom and good will, and giving them your own.
The Habit Membership is a culture of generosity.
The Habit Membership has been just what I needed to grow as a writer. It’s a great combination of nuts and bolts, encouragement, and good conversation around writing. And between the webinars, sample work edits, grammar course, and book club, it feels like a great deal. I’m grateful Jonathan Rogers is using his gifts to help others and cultivate this community!

If you receive The Habit weekly letters – or better yet, have had the pleasure of taking one of his online writing courses – you already know that Jonathan Rogers serves up rich portions of insight and practical advice on all aspects of the writing life. With a membership I get all the extra helpings I could ask for, but more than that, I have new ways to connect with other writers and explore the joys, struggles, and process of writing. Jonathan isn’t just sharing his wisdom, but creating a space where people who are serious about the craft can grow together and encourage each other.
Participating in the Habit Membership boosted my confidence and helped me go from saying “I want to be a writer” to saying “I am a writer”; nothing has shaped my awareness of the written word and how I approach writing more than being a part of this community. I can’t say enough good things about The Habit!
The Habit Membership is for writers of all experience levels. A beginning writer has a lot to learn in The Habit. But also–and this is just as important–a beginning writer has a lot to give to The Habit Membership. One of the foundational principles of The Habit is the idea that writing is an act of generosity and friendship. In this community, you’ll have ample opportunity to practice and receive both.
The Habit Membership is geared toward adults. If you aren’t at least college-age, The Habit isn’t going to be a good fit for you. But I’d love to have you when you’re done with high school!
I (Jonathan) am available for questions and discussion during office hours (via videoconference) every couple of weeks, and I participate regularly in the forums. The spirit of The Habit, however, is writer-to-writer conversation and encouragement. My goal is to create an environment of hospitality and generosity where writers can learn together, connect, and spur one another on.
One-on-one help isn’t really the spirit of The Habit Membership. I (Jonathan) will address individual questions insofar as they are relevant to the wider community, and every week or two I will pick a piece of writing from the community for detailed critique, but otherwise I won’t be able to include one-on-one help as part of The Habit Membership. (Sometimes, however, I take on editing/coaching clients on an individual basis. But that service is not included as part of The Habit Membership. Email me at info@jonathan-rogers.com if you want to know more about one-on-one editing and coaching.)
