Lesson 18: Abundance

Writing Exercise

This last exercise of Writing through the Wardrobe is an experiment in abundance. In a paragraph or two, describe a feast, real or imaginary. There are two rules for your to follow:

  1. Your description needs to consist mostly of a list. Instead of trying to describe individual dishes in detail (“the luscious apple filling combined with the buttery, flaky crust of the pie…”), let the sheer quantity of the dishes communicate to the reader the abundance of the feast.
  2. When you’re pretty sure the list of dishes in your feast is long enough, keep going. Make your list 50% longer.
