Lecture 16: Seeing from a Character’s Perspective

Writing Exercise

In Lesson 16 we talked at some length about the way Harper Lee portrayed the nighttime attack on the Finch children without the benefit of visual imagery. This week’s writing exercise is to write a scene in which the point-of-view character can’t see. It’s up to you to decide why your character can’t see. But consider what sensory stimuli your character does have at his or her disposal, and rely heavily on those.
