Lecture 16: Allegory

Essay Question

Besides Aslan, list five “allegorical elements” in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Lecture 17: Slowing Down

Writing Exercise

Think about a conversation you’ve had with another person recently. Without changing any of the objective facts, depict that conversation from the point of view of the other person. The goal here is to explore how the other person subjectively experiences the same objective facts that you experienced. (Note:  this exercise will be easier if you depict a disagreement or misunderstanding.)

Lecture 18: Abundance

Writing Exercise

This last exercise of Writing through the Wardrobe is an experiment in abundance. In a paragraph or two, describe a feast, real or imaginary. There are two rules for your to follow:

    1. Your description needs to consist mostly of a list. Instead of trying to describe individual dishes in detail (“the luscious apple filling combined with the buttery, flaky crust of the pie…”), let the sheer quantity of the dishes communicate to the reader the abundance of the feast.
    2. When you’re pretty sure the list of dishes in your feast is long enough, keep going. Make your list 50% longer.
