We’ll be visiting the Yorkshire Dales for the next installment of the “Writing with…” series of online creative writing classes. In Writing with All Creatures, we will read through All Creatures Great and Small to see how James Herriot translated his experiences as a country veterinarian into the funny, charming stories so loved by generations of readers. Then we’ll apply his techniques to our own writing.

Writing with All Creatures includes six 90-minute live lectures* via Zoom, as well as a dedicated online forum for discussion and writing exercises.

Topics to be covered include (but are not limited to):

  • Anecdotal Storytelling
  • Quick Strokes for Minor Characters
  • Narration and Point of View
  • Managing Time and Space
  • Writing Landscape
  • Dialogue and Dialect
  • Description and Imagery
  • Action and Movement
  • Narrative Pacing
  • Moving from Experience to Fiction

*Recordings of the lectures will also be available for learners who can’t attend the live lectures.
